Sonoelastography to Assess Muscular Stiffness Among Older Adults and its Use for the Diagnosis of Sarcopenia: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Changes in muscle stiffness have been reported with sarcopenia. Sonoelastography is an accessible and non-radiating imaging technique allowing quantification of elastic properties of tissue. We performed a systematic review of the literature to investigate whether sonoelastography can be a reliable method to assess sarcopenia in older patients. We searched Medline, Google Scholar, Scopus, SpringerLink and Science direct from January 1, 1990 to April 1, 2020. Three independent review authors assessed trial elig… Show more

“…Fourth, we only included English publications, which may have resulted in selection bias. Fifth, some new ultrasound parameters, such as pennation angle, muscle contraction potential and muscle microcirculation, have been associated with sarcopenia 13,46,47 . However, the included studies in our review did not address these parameters.…”

“…Fifth, some new ultrasound parameters, such as pennation angle, muscle contraction potential and muscle microcirculation, have been associated with sarcopenia. 13 , 46 , 47 However, the included studies in our review did not address these parameters. Finally, some new ultrasound technologies, such as panoramic ultrasound imaging 48 and ultrasonic elastography, 47 have been applied in sarcopenia research, but our review did not include relevant studies.…”

“…Recently, EBUS elastography has been widely applied in the diagnosis of breast cancer, prostate cancer, liver disease, myopathies etc. (Berzigotti 2017;Janczyk et al 2020;Kapetas et al 2019;Wildeboer et al 2020).…”

“…CT and MRI are the gold standards for non‐invasive evaluation of muscle mass and quantity 9 . However, MRI and CT are not frequently employed in primary medical institutions due to the high equipment cost and lack of mobility 4,10 . As of yet, there is no consensus on cut‐off points for sarcopenia in daily clinical settings 7,11 …”
