Something New about Something Old: A 10-Year Follow-Up on Classical and New Psychoactive Tryptamines and Results of Analysis

Abstract: New psychoactive tryptamines may be a public health risk since they intend to mimic the hallucinogenic effects of regulated psychoactive drugs. Few studies describe uses and clinical effects of unregulated new psychoactive tryptamines. This study aims (1) to explore the presence of tryptamines classified as NPS among the substances delivered for analysis to a harm-reduction organization; (2) to describe the substances found in the samples after analysis; and (3) to compare analytical results of regulated vs. n… Show more

“…4‐AcO‐DMT was the most commonly used tryptamine by participants, and this compound also appears to be among the most prevalent novel tryptamines in recent years (Palamar & Le, ; Palma‐Conesa et al, ). Although some participants felt the effects are comparable with those of DMT in high doses, the effects of more common (lower) doses were commonly compared with psilocybin.…”

“…The 2C-B pill content was previously analyzed by means of gas chromatography associated with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The method used permits to check for most common drugs of abuse including cocaine, MDMA, LSD, amphetamine and methamphetamine, heroin, 2C-B and other phenethylamines, DMT and other tryptamines, ketamine, psilocybin, salvinorin A, natural and synthetic cannabinoids, and most of the NPSs ( Caudevilla-Gálligo et al, 2012 ; González et al, 2015 ; Grifell et al, 2017 ; Palma-Conesa et al, 2017 ; Quintana et al, 2017 ). Participants were given a choice of three doses to choose from, 10, 15 or 20 mg 2C-B, based on their stated preference from previous experience.…”

“…While synthetic versions of DMT and other psychedelic tryptamines such as α-methyltryptamine (AMT) also exist and have been used for over half a century, dozens of newer tryptamines have been discovered and continue to be discovered 1 , 6 . Indeed, it appears that many of these tryptamines (eg, 5-MeO-DMT, 4-AcO-DMT) have emerged or re-emerged in the recreational drug space as the next-generation drugs projected to grow in popularity alongside more common psychedelics such as LSD 7 , 8 …”
