Some viscoelastic porperties of poly(vinyl chloride)/dioctyl phthalate systems

SynopsisSteady-state and transient shear flow properties of poly(viny1 chloride) and chlorinated polyethylene dissolved in dioctyl phthalate were studied at different temperatures and polymer concentrations. In the case of poly(viny1 chloride)/dioctyl phthalate systems the presence of a sol-gel transition temperature was observed, whereas for chlorinated polyethylene/dioctyl phthalate systems the mechanism of flow was the same in the whole range of temperatures and concentrations. On the basis of the data obtained for both polymer/solution systems, we conclude that the presence of crystallites, rather than hydrogen bonds, determines the rheological behavior of poly(viny1 chloride)/dioctyl phthalate systems.

The rheological properties of PVC compounds reflect the state of the flow units. The steady state structure which may be found in PVC melts is predicted to depend on the interaction of stresses in simple flow and temperatures for transition from rubberlike solid to liquid state and transition from a liquid state containing crystallite aggregates to a liquid state without d crystallite aggregates, called the gel destruction temperature T and the dynamic melting temperature Ttp. respectively. The model predictions for Td and T2w are compared with experimental data.

The behavior of PVC changes drastically with the temperature and the method of sample preparation. In the steady-state shear mode, upon a decrease of the rate of deformation, the data may show either a steady increase of the shear viscosity or a leveling off to a Newtonian plateau. In the dynamic test mode, both the storage modulus, G', and the loss modulus, G", show a n effect of the yield stress. Only at temperatures above 2 10°C are flow curves normal for polymer melts obtained. Rigid and nonrigid PVC formulations have been tested in Weissenberg Rheogoniometer, using steady-state or dynamic test modes at temperatures from 140 to 220°C. It was observed that yield affects elasticity more (measured by the first normal stress difference or the storage modulus) than viscosity (expressed by the shear stress or the loss modulus). The corrected for yield plots of elastic vs. viscous parameter can be easily interpreted in terms of a composite flow.
