Some types of vertebral pathologies in the Argar Culture (Bronze Age, SE Spain)

Abstract: A collection of 1825 vertebrae belonging to 105 individuals from several Argaric Culture sites (Bronze Age, SE of Spain) were studied. Several pathologies that could provide information about activity patterns were analysed, including spondylolysis, compression fractures and Schmorl's nodes. Spondylolysis appears exclusively in men. Compression fractures seem to be more related to age (osteoporosis) and are more frequent in women, but without statistical significance. Schmorl's nodes affect a large number of t… Show more

“…Bioarchaeological research has systematically explored evidence of past activity patterns as imprinted on skeletal remains (e.g. Kieser et al, ; Marchi, ; Robson Brown et al, ; Üstündağ, ; Jiménez‐Brobeil et al, ; Ogilvie & Hilton, ). Among the primary anatomical areas examined have been the entheses, that is, the sites where muscles, tendons or ligaments attach on the bones (e.g.…”

“…Schmorl's nodes are commonly treated as a trace and indicator of physical stress and trauma (Stirland and Waldron 1997;Šlaus 2000;Üstündağ 2009;Jiménez-Brobeil et al 2010;Novak and Šlaus 2011;Novak et al 2012). Those changes are also related to high axial loading (Wagner et al 2000;Baranto et al 2006;Nagashima et al 2013).…”
