Some Technical Aspects of the Rheological Properties of High Concentration Fine Suspensions to Avoid Environmental Disasters

Abstract: The behavior of slurries and suspensions made by mixing solid particles and liquids is very important for various industrial applications. The latest accidental failure events at tailings facilities (Kolontár, Baia Mare) have focused public interest into this field. Nowadays, environmental practice is turning to use dry deposition techniques or at least as high concentration slurries or pastes as possible, to avoid large spills in case of an accidental failure of an embankment. High concentration slurries are … Show more

“…The Blaine method is based on air permeability of material bed, and it is widely used in the cement industry [45]. The BET method represents the inner pores (micro-and mezo pores) of the particles as well, based on gas adsorption on the surface of the investigated solid material.…”

“…To conduct the sensitivity tests in this study, parameter value ranges for the equations were determined based on an extensive literature review related to mining tailings [2,[7][8][9][10]14,27,37,38,[47][48][49][50][51][52][53]. The tailings studied by these authors included coal, copper, iron, lithium, base metal, nickel, gold, pyrophyllite, uranium, and zinc, as well as synthetic and theoretical materials, and the obtained values are listed in Appendix A.…”

“…Rheology investigated the flow and deformation behavior of fluids in different contexts [4,5]. Rheological parameters are obtained and analyzed through rheological tests conducted on various materials over time [6][7][8]. Several factors can influence the variability of rheological parameters, including shear rate, solid concentration, pH, and temperature [9].…”

“…By this software the first (velocity) and second (acceleration) derivatives of the spline smoothed settling curve (height of the settling mud as function of time) and the main technical parameters for thickener design can be determined. Theoretical terminal settling velocity calculations were carried out by methods developed earlier [8,9,10]. The aim of the carried out research work was to reveal consequences necessary for the rod-lamella thickener development.…”
