Some Schiff Base Surfactants as Steel‐Corrosion Inhibitors

Abstract: Two series of Schiff base amphiphiles were prepared by condensation of benzaldehyde or anisaldehyde with three different alkyl chain length fatty amines namely: dodecyl, hexadecyl and octadecyl amine. The chemical structures of the prepared Schiff bases were confirmed by using different techniques, (elemental analysis, FTIR and 1 H-NMR spectra). The data of structural analysis for these compounds were confirmed by the purity of the synthesized amphiphiles. The synthesized Schiff bases were evaluated as corrosi… Show more

“…They have many advantages, including low toxicity, safety, easy adsorption on the steel surface, low cost, ease of production, and high inhibition efficiency [13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. A surfactant compound is one that tends to accumulate at a surface or interface due to its high surface activity resulting from the adsorption of the surfactant molecules at the interface between bulk phases, forming aggregations called micelles, such as air and water, oil and water or electrode and solution [20][21][22]. The concentration at which surfactants aggregate is called the critical micelle concentration (CMC).…”

“…The high corrosion rates in the initial stages of the corrosion process can be attributed to the exposed active sites on the metal surface that are not yet covered by the inhibitor molecules [44]. The corrosion rates decreased by increasing the immersion time, until the minimum values are reached after 24 h. The maximum corrosion rates were recorded after 1 h immersion at: 2.13, 1.43, 1.67, 1.48 mg cm -2 h -1 in the presence of 50 ppm by weight of 400S, 600S, 400V, and 600V, respectively.…”

“…Heteroatoms such as nitrogen oxygen are able to form coordinate covalent bond with metal due to their free electron pairs and thus acting as inhibitor; compounds with p-bonds generally have well inhibitive properties due to interaction of orbital with metal surface. Hence, acylhydrazone Schiff base may have excellent corrosion inhibition performance [16,17]. In addition, Schiff base compounds can form stable complexes with the metal.…”
