Some results from studies on tectonomagnetic effect in NW Turkey.

Abstract: In Turkey, studies on the tectonomagnetic effect have started at the end of 1970. Taking simultaneous measurements of the total geomagnetic field at a few stations in NW Turkey by proton precession magnetometers, some tectonomagnetic effects up to 50 nT accompanying felt earthquakes are observed within the period December 1972-March 1975. A linear relation is obtained between the magnitude and distance of the earthquakes which are close to the magnetic stations (less than 75 km), and the observed tectonomagnet… Show more

“…Chen et al (2004) claim that such a ZIZ appears in Taiwan after 1997, coinciding with the onset of seismicity, while the ZIZ disappears after the Chi-Chi earthquakes and its aftershocks sequence. Zeng et al (2002) claim that a ZIZ appeared within 2.5 years before the Haicheng and Tangshan earthquakes in China, while Ispir et al (1976) report a similar process about 1 year before M>=6.0 events in Turkey during 1966-1969. Tazima et al (1976) report the same behavior within 2.5 years before 80% of events in Japan during 1954-1966.…”

“…Recently, however, by the great advance in the measuring techniques and the fair improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio, a number of highly reliable changes in the geomagnetic field associated with earthquake occurrences or fault creep motions have been detected in many countries (TALWANI and KOVACH, 1972;JOHNSTON et al, 1976;ISPIR et al, 1976;CHU, 1976).…”
