Since the 1980s, polyaryletherketones (PAEKs) have been increasingly employed as biomaterials for trauma, orthopedic, and spinal implants. We have synthesized the extensive polymer science literature as it relates to structure, mechanical properties, and chemical resistance of PAEK biomaterials. With this foundation, one can more readily appreciate why this family of polymers will be inherently strong, inert, and biocompatible. Due to its relative inertness, PEEK biomaterials are an attractive platform upon which to develop novel bioactive materials, and some steps have already been taken in that direction, with the blending of HA and TCP into sintered PEEK. However, to date, blended HA-PEEK composites have involved a trade-off in mechanical properties in exchange for their increased bioactivity. PEEK has had the greatest clinical impact in the field of spine implant design, and PEEK is now broadly accepted as a radiolucent alternative to metallic biomaterials in the spine community. For mature fields, such as total joint replacements and fracture fixation implants, radiolucency is an attractive but not necessarily critical material feature.

Materials for medical implants should have suitable mechanical properties, excellent biocompatibility and high corrosion resistance. They should not stimulate allergic and immunologic reactions and should not cause cancer. The use of aluminum as a construction material in implantology is continuously expanding. There are various methods for surface treatment to improve its biocompatibility. In this study aluminum samples anodized in 15% H 2 SO 4 or treated with positive or negative corona discharge were investigated. PDL-cell line of immortalized cells, precursors of periodontal ligament and RAW 264.7 cell line from mouse macrophages are used for the bioassays. The results show that 10 and 20 lls vitality, proliferation and growth. Polymer treated but uncharged samples show good results.

Titanium nitride (TiN) as a gate material in BiCMOS devices for biomedical implants

Titanium nitride (TiN) is a proven bio-compatible conductor and as such increasingly applied as an microelectrode material in novel biomedical devices. This paper reports the functioning of BiCMOS devices with titanium nitride as a gate electrode and interconnect material all fabricated in five photolithographic steps. This simple BiCMOS process allows the on-chip integration of a biomedical electrode arrays with electronics to reduce the electrode wiring density and hence reduce the electrodes footprint. This approach can be useful for medical devices like cochlear implants (CI's) where a high density electrode array is applied in a small volume.
