High-strength concrete (HSC) columns are usually provided with heavy confining steel within the potential plastic hinge region to restore flexural ductility. However, as the effectiveness of confining steel decreases with the concrete strength, the required confining steel content for high-strength concrete columns becomes very large, which causes steel congestion in the proximity of beam-column joints. A better method is to adopt a concrete-filled-steel-tube (CFST) column, which uses a hollow steel tube to confine high-strength concrete. Compared with ordinary reinforcement, concrete-filled-steel-tube columns provide a more uniform confining pressure to the concrete core and reduce steel congestion. Nonetheless, a major shortcoming of concrete-filled-steel-tube columns is that the imperfect interface bonding occurs at the elastic stage as steel dilates more than concrete in compression. This adversely affects the confinement of the steel tube and decreases the elastic strength and modulus. To resolve the problem, it is proposed in this study to use external steel confinement in the forms of rings and ties to restrict the dilation of the steel tube. For verification, a series of uniaxial compression tests on externally confined concrete-filled-steel-tube columns was performed. Theoretical models for predicting the uniaxial load-carrying capacity of ring-confined concrete-filled-steeltube columns were also developed.

Abstract:The temperature field analysis method of steel tube reinforced columns under fire by finite element analysis software ABAQUS is proposed in this paper. The theoretical method is validated by tests, and the calculated results agree well with those of tests. On the basis of that, the influencing laws of temperature rising time; section perimeter; steel reinforcement ratio and sectional core area ratio on temperature field are discussed. It has been found that the surface temperatures of steel tube reinforced columns increase obviously with temperature rising time, and the temperatures of steel tubes and core concrete increase slowly. The effects of section size and sectional core area ratio on temperature field are significant, but steel ratio has very little effect on temperature both of steel tube and of sectional center. These achievements make it possible to study further theoretical study on the mechanic performance of steel tube reinforced concrete columns in fire.

This paper presents an experimental investigation into concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) members under lateral impact at mid span using a dropped weight moving with low velocity. A series of tests were carried out to obtain the residual deformation mode and the time histories of impact loads. The testing parameters include, impact energy and the axial level on CFST. Based on the testing data, stability value of impact force, time of duration impact, as well as the maximal deformation at mid span of the composite members under different axial load level and impact energy are analyzed and discussed.
