Abstract:Recent developments in tumor promotion are reviewed, particularly the biochemical effects of phorbol esters and new tumor promoters such as the teleocidins. The role of active oxygen species, and the nature and properties of the phorboid receptor, protein kinase C, are discussed. Finally, the relevance of gene expression to promotion, and of promotion to human cancer are explored.
