Some Quaternary Salts of Pyrazine

Abstract: Previous communications from this Labora-tory1 23have reported quaternary salts of substituted thiazoles and of hexamethylenetetramine. The present paper deals with similar derivatives of pyrazine. Since Shear and associates2,3 have found that certain pyridinium salts damage sarcoma cells in vivo it appeared desirable to learn whether analogous pyrazinium salts have similar effects. Samples of the compounds described below have been submitted to the National Cancer Institute for screening tests.Apparently no e… Show more

“…All chemicals were of analytical grade unless stated otherwise. N-methylpyrazinium ion was prepared by the direct methylation of pyrazine (Fluka AG, Switzerland) by methyliodide (SISCO, India) and recrystallized twice from absolute ethanol [29]. Stock solutions of 3 × 10 -2 mol L -1 mercury(II) chloride, 3 × 10 -2 mol L -1 N-methylpyrazinium iodide and 5 × 10 -2 mol L -1 potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) were prepared by accurately weighing certified analytical grade samples and dissolving them in water.…”

“…The difficult synthesis of diquaternized pyrazines is perhaps one contributing factor to this lag. Notron et al were the first to prepare monoquaternary pyrazine salts with phenacyl bromides . However, they were unable to achieve diquaternization because of the severe decrease in the nucleophilicity of the second nitrogen atom after the first alkylation step .…”
