Some principles and practices of genetic biobanking studies

Abstract: Genetic biobanking studies are becoming increasingly common as researchers recognise the need for large samples to identify the genetic basis of susceptibility to complex disease. In the present review, the authors give a brief overview of some of the issues that should be considered when implementing such a large-scale project, from study design to sample management, data coding and storage to the statistical analysis and engagement with the public. Specific solutions to these issues are presented, as impleme… Show more

“…There is evidence to show that despite the recent increase in media publicity about genetic research, the level of knowledge in patients with chronic diseases such as asthma has not undergone a parallel increase [7]. Important aspects regarding this are discussed by MACLEOD et al [1], including data confidentiality, consent and reporting of results to patients. Genetic testing has given rise to other issues such as the possibility of stigma and challenging cultural and social attitudes.…”

“…In the first paper of the series, MACLEOD et al [1] demonstrate that when studying genetic aspects of complex diseases such as hypertension and OSAHS, good sample and data management is necessary to ensure that the data collected are stored accurately and efficiently, and passed through the process of analysis in an orderly manner. In order to be able to collect information on a complex trait, increasingly larger cohorts are required for adequate power and subsequent replication of findings.…”

“…The registration of each sample entering and exiting the bio-bank is centrally controlled and managed by a software that must be backed up frequently [65] The labeling, registration and physical location of each sample, as well as its identifycation data, quantity, type of resource are link to a bar- code and barcode reader system to allow the rapid tracking and position and quantity of the specimen. As for biological point of view, optimization of protocols for cryoconservation, definition of best practice and standard operating procedures, bio-safety, and a temperature system control must be defined.…”
