“…In the previous study on patients with advanced malignant disease, 46 % of 38 patients had TPP values over ten. Other workers [Brin et al 1965; C hong and Ho] have claimed that only values for the TPP effect over 25 % should be considered Meon t-5 10-2 11-5 SEM 1-9 1-8 2-6 Figure 1. Effect of adding thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP effect) on the transketolase activity of the whole blood of patients with early bronchial and breast carcinomas.…”

“…The next collection of data was made between February 26 and May 25, 1965 on 112 subjects who were designated the “Spring” group. A portion of the Fall data has been reported previously (1) but it will be repeated in this paper with additional material, for purposes of a comparison by seasons. Among the 214 apartment‐living residential subjects in the total study, there were 46 subjects who were in both groups; they will be referred to as the “Control” group.…”

“…The haemolyzed whole blood was used to mea sure the activity of the enzyme transketolase (TK) which has been reported to be a sensitive and spe cific method for assessing the thiamin status [Brin et al, 1965], The TK enzyme activity was mea sured according to the simplified method de scribed by Basu et al [1974b]. As low TK activity may result from a lack of the enzyme cocarboxy lase which is derived from thiamin [Breslow, 1962], the TK activity was also measured in the presence of added thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP).…”

“…As low TK activity may result from a lack of the enzyme cocarboxy lase which is derived from thiamin [Breslow, 1962], the TK activity was also measured in the presence of added thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP). The TK activity was expressed as the number of /<mols of £>-sedohcptulosc-7-phosphate formed in itially at 37 °C, per minute per millilitre haemo lyzed whole blood, while any enhancement of the enzyme activity, which resulted from the added TPP, was expressed as a percentage of the original activity and referred to as the 'TPP effect' [Brin et al, 1965],…”
