Addition of fertilisers increased significantly the levels of NH4-N and N03-N in nursery potting media, and the effect of fertiliser form on NH4-N and N03-N levels was less apparent in cropped media than in fallow media. Nitrification was only partially controlled in the soil media, and 'N-serve' (2-chloro-6-(trichloromethyl) -pyridine) had less effect on nitrification in soilless media (peat-sand and peat-sand-sawdust) because of low microbial activity. If the application of fertiliser nitrogen (N) did not affect mineralisation of native soil N, estimates of N recovery showed that aster plants recovered less than 50% of the applied N. In soilless media plant recovery of N from osmocote was about 10% above those from IBDU (isobutylidene diurea), (NHt) 2S04, and urea, which in turn were higher than those from N-serve treatments of these fertilisers. In the soil medium percent N recoveries from all fertiliser treatments were similar. Total recoveries for fertiliser N were consistently higher in fallow pots than in their cropped counterparts probably because of higher leaching losses of N in cropped media. A high proportion of the applied N was immobilised, more in fallow than in cropped media. The mean percentages of immobilisation were 50 and 39 for peat-sand, 81 and 54 for peat-sand-sawdust, and 37 and 18 for peat-sand-soil in fallow and cropped soils respectively. RESUMO -O substrato é um fator determinante para obtenção de uma muda de qualidade, devendo este abranger aspectos econômicos, ecológicos, físicos e químicos, proporcionar sustentação durante o enraizamento das plantas e manter a base aquecida durante o enraizamento, enquanto promove boa umidade e permite aeração. O objetivo desse trabalho foi caracterizar fisicamente substratos orgânicos, de forma a subsidiar a escolha da mistura que poderá ser utilizada para o enraizamento de estacas de goiabeira. Os substratos avaliados foram à casca de arroz carbonizada (CAC), adquirida de uma empresa familiar, composto orgânico (CO) obtido pela compostagem de resíduos orgânicos (esterco bovino e materiais de limpeza do pomar: galhos, gramíneas, folhas e dentre outras). Cinco proporções foram formuladas: (S1 -100% CO; S2 -25% CAC + 75% CO; S3 -50% CAC + 50% CO; S4 -75% CAC + 25% CO e S5 -100% CAC), nas quais foi avaliada a densidade seca (Ds); Porosidade total (PT); Espaço de aeração (EA); Água facilmente disponível (AFD); Água tamponante (AT); Água disponível (AD) e Água remanescente (AR). Some physical and chemical characteristics of three New Zealand commercial nursery potting media (peat-sand, peat-sand-sawdust, and peat-sand-soil) and their constituents were determined. Two kinds of peat were used, one weakly decomposed (Mataura) and the other strongly humified (Dipton). Mataura peat had lower bulk density, cation exchange capacity ,eEC), soluble salts, total carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), and lower carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio but higher porosity, air or container capacity, water-holding capacity, and pH than Dipton peat. The media reflected these properties except water-holding capacity: at low moisture suction the Dipton peat media held more water than the Mataura ones. This difference was related to the different physical structures of the peats and the effects of amendments on these structures. Sawdust had a high total pore space, air space, percent pore space, and air capacity. However, the easily available water (EAW) and water buffering capacity (WBC) were low, indicating that sawdust does not retain much water for plant use. Added sand reduced total pore space, air capacity, EAW, and WBC thus reducing aeration and water available for plant use. Soil had low values for air capacity and EAW although its WBC was high because of its micropore structure. However, in peat-sand-soil media soil effects were not expressed, as these media had air and water characteristics similar to those for the peat-sand media. Peat and sawdust had a low pH, sand a high pH, and soil an intermediate pH. The CEC for sand and sawdust was extremely low. As expected, soluble salt levels of all media and their constituents were low and well below critical levels. The C/N ratio of sawdust was extremely high and this was reflected in high C/N values in peat-sand-sawdust media.
