Some New Equations to Describe Phosphate Sorption by Soils

Abstract: Phosphate sorption was studied on surface and subsurface soils sampled from the old field experiments at Askov, Denmark. Two empirical three-parameter equations. an extended Freundlich and an extended Langmuir equation are proposed and compared with the Langmuir, the Freundlich, the 'double' Langmuir. the Gunary, and the Fitter-Sutton equations. In the proposed equations the affinity parameter of the Langmuir equation and the exponent of the Freundlich equation are replaced by the term Bc-I) the value of which … Show more

“…It is important to remark that most of the models analysed for both variables have been applied by different authors exclusively for predicting tree height (Pearl and Reed 1920;Winsor 1932;Richards 1959;Curtis 1967;Yang et al 1978;Schreuder et al 1979;Bates and Watts 1980;Schnute 1981;Sibbesen 1981;Wykoff et al 1982;Buford 1986;Larson 1986;Ratkowsky and Reedy 1986;Larsen and Hann 1987;Zeide 1989;Ratkowsky 1990;Huang et al 1992;Prodan et al 1997) and tree volume Sharma et al (2002) and Prodan et al 1997. “…Let y = ax b* , and consider then b*(x) = bx -c or b*(x) = b)(c/x) (see EPM 1 and 2 in Table 1), which are both parameterizations of the Freundlich model (Sibbesen, 1981). I have not yet found these types of 'modified power models', where b is a function of x, fitted to species-area data sets, but they have been applied to other types of biological data (e.g.…”

“…Phosphorus sorption by soil components has also been studied using synthetic or naturally occurring oxides and hydroxides of Fe and Al (e.g., Parfitt 1989; van Riemsdijk et al 1984) (Soon 1990 (Sibbesen 1981). In this study, a includes the amount of indigenous sorbed P as determined by anion exchange desportion (P').…”
