Some last glaciation drift deposits near Pontypridd, South Wales

Abstract: Drift deposits exposed in a large open cut are described. The basal member of the sequence consists of bedded sandy gravels, and these are overlain by a grey silty sand containing abundant striated pebbles and boulders. T h e uppermost deposit consists of a brown poorly sorted drift containing silty and sandy lenses. Analysis of the texture, index properties and densities of the sediments, together with the shape, lithology and fabric of the contained pebbles suggests that the basal gravels were deposited by s… Show more

“…This is similar to the periglacial hypothesis but argues that the landforms are the result of solifluction operating on glacial and periglacial drifts following glaciation largely during the periglacial episodes of the Younger Dryas (Loch Lomond) Stadial and follows from research by authors such as Potts (1971) and Harris and Wright (1980) in Wales who identified glacially modified clasts within the deposits. This hypothesis was developed in the Cheviot Hills by Douglas and Harrison (1985;1987).…”

“…The stratigraphy and sedimentology of the tills at Llanilid were used by Donnelly (1988) and Harris and Donnelly (1991) to verify their Late Devensian age compared to apparently older tills in the Vale of Glamorgan. A similar study proposed a Late Devensian age for tills at Pontypridd (Harris and Wright, 1980).…”
