Some ionosonde observations of ionosphere modification by very high power, high frequency ground-based transmission

Abstract: Some early observations of significant ionospheric modification resulting from F‐region heating by a very high power, high frequency transmitter located near Boulder, Colorado, are presented in this paper. A description of the Platteville heating transmitter facility, the locations of ionosonde and photometric diagnostic equipments, and the geometry of the experiment are given in a companion paper by Utlaut [1970]. A single‐plane inverted log periodic antenna, which has a half‐power beam‐width of the order of … Show more

“…The long wavelength ('-'1 kin) field-aligned irregularities giving rise to artificial spread F (Utlaut et al, 1970;Utlaut and Violette, 1972;Wright, 1973) could not, however, be explained in terms of the above instability process. The causative mechanism for the generation of long wavelength irregularities remained obscure for quite a while and is now attributed to either a thermal self-focusing mechanism Thome and Perkins, 1974) or the alternative mechanisms of stimulated Brillouin scattering (Cragin and Fejer, 1974) and stimu-This paper is not subject to U.S. copyright.…”

“…Ionospheric modification experiments have been conducted since the early 1970s using high-power highfrequency (HF) radio waves to artificially modify the ionosphere [Utlaut et al, 1970;Gordon et al, 1971]. Two important observations made during these experiments entail the production of enhanced plasma waves in the ionosphere [Wong and Taylor, 1971;Carlson et al, 1972] and the excitation of artificial geomagnetic field-aligned irregularities (AFAIs) [Fialer, 1974].…”

“…Over the last decade and a half a continuing effort has been made to study artificial field aligned irregularities (AFAIs) generated by high-power high-frequency (HF) radio waves. Initial experiments designed to explore HF-induced phenomena were conducted at Platteville, Colorado [Utlaut et al, 1970], and shortly thereafter at Arecibo, Puerto Rico [' Gordon et al, 1971]. Many of the early experimental and theoretical discoveries of this era are presented in the November 1974 issue of Radio Science.…”
