Some Illustrations of Large Tectonically Driven Climate Changes in Earth History

Abstract: A century ago, the pioneering book published in 1924 Die Klimate der geologischen Vorzeit explained by plate motion the evolution of vegetation revealed in sedimentary records. Nevertheless, they did not invoke climate changes. In the second part of the 20th century, the intricate relationship between tectonics, long-term carbon cycle, and climate was depicted by Walker (1981). Since these major steps, climate modeling of the Earth system kept on improving and including more and more components and processes t… Show more

“…The lower elevation of East and North Africa was associated with higher levels of precipitation, which resulted in climatic conditions that favour the colonization of arboreal vegetation, whilst the increasing elevation during the Oligocene-Miocene era facilitated the aridization of these regions (Ramstein et al 2019). This led to the emergence of the first savannah/grassland habitats that make up much of the southern African continent today (Sepulchre et al 2006;Bonnefille 2010;Ramstein et al 2019).…”

“…The tectonic setting of continents can exert a strong influence on glacial dynamics and ultimately on the preservation and representativeness of the glacial record and on the basin stratigraphic arrangement Isbell et al, 2008;Ramstein et al, 2019). The late Neoproterozoic glacial record is well known as being influenced by plate tectonic processes Eyles and Januszczak, 2004;Arnaud and Etienne, 2011;Li et al, 2013;Le Heron et al, 2017;Kennedy and Eyles, 2019).…”

“…The history of plate motion is intimately linked to the evolution of both solid Earth processes and environmental change at the surface of Earth. Tectonics shapes the distribution of continents and oceans, the elevation and location of mountain ranges, the eruption of massive and widespread volcanism and the opening and closing of oceanic gateways [148][149][150][151] . These changes over time dictate the physical circulation and chemical composition of the ocean and atmosphere and govern the distribution of terrestrial and ocean biomes [152][153][154][155] , with implications for understanding modern and future planetary changes 156 .…”
