“…This is a noteworthy finding because the water-based fluids are subject to high levels of microbial contamination, including endotoxin-producing gram-negative bacteria, and the inhalation of endotoxin has been hypothesized to exert a protective effect against lung cancer. Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas) have been reported in machining fluids at concentrations as high as 108 colony-forming units per milliliter of fluid (25), and in the present study endotoxins were detected in samples of fluid taken at the work sites under investigation (unpublished data). Enterline et al (26) have proposed that the consistent deficit of lung cancer among workers exposed to cotton dust may be due to endotoxins, which may inhibit the growth of malignant cells in the lungs by stimulating macrophage activity, by inducing interferon release, by mitogen activity, or by inducing tumor necrosis factor.…”

“…Although little is known about the factors that can cause the development of sinusitis in MWF-exposed workers, several researchers have suggested that some respiratory health effects seen in MWF mist exposed workers may be related to contaminating microorganisms, or their byproducts (such as endotoxins, exotoins, and mycotoxins) [16][17][18][19] . Community based studies and case studies have indicated that fungi or bacteria is one of the most important causes of allergic diseases such as bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis and sinusitis [4][5][6][7][8][9][10] .…”

“…MWF that have high concentrations of Gram-negative bacteria have been shown to have high concentrations of endotoxin (Bennett, 1972;Milton and Johnson, 1995;Rossmoore and Rossmoore, 1980). They may be an etiologic agent in the deterioration in respiratory health of workers exposed to MWF (Holdom, 1976;Hill and Al-Zubaidy, 1979;Kennedy et al, 1989;Sprince et al, 1997).…”
