Abstract. Structural-temporal approach based on the notion of incubation time is used for interpretation of strain-rate effects in the fracture process of concretes and rocks. It is established that temporal dependences of concretes and rocks are calculated by the incubation time criterion. Experimentally observed different relations between ultimate stresses of concrete and mortar in static and dynamic conditions are explained. It is obtained that compressive strength of mortar at a low strain rate is greater than that of concrete, but at a high strain rate the opposite is true. Influence of confinement pressure on the mechanism of dynamic strength for concretes and rocks is discussed. Both size effect and scale effect for concrete and rocks samples subjected to impact loading are analyzed. Statistical nature of a size effect contrasts to a scale effect that is related to the definition of a spatio-temporal representative volume determining the fracture event on the given scale level.

The change in mechanical properties of high‐temperature rock after cooling treatments is getting increasing attention. However, only a few studies have been conducted on the dynamic characteristic parameters. Therefore, this study aims to perform a dynamic damage analysis of high‐temperature rocks subjected to different thermal shocks. Accordingly, the specimens were grouped and heated to 200°C, 400°C, 600°C, and 800°C, and they were cooled by natural, water, and liquid nitrogen cooling. Ultrasonic detector tests, the split Hopkinson pressure bar experiments, and scanning electron microscope tests of the high‐temperature granite specimens were conducted using different cooling methods. Subsequently, the change rules of dynamic stress–strain curves and properties were calculated, and the morphology and micromorphology of fragments were compared. Based on the outcomes, the thermal shock damage and impact damage evolution were evaluated and quantified. The findings revealed that when the treatment temperature increases, the dynamic peak stress and elastic modulus decrease, while the peak strain increases, and the effect of rapid cooling was more significant in the influence of rock dynamic characteristics. Moreover, when the damage factor is more than 0.51, the change of dynamic stress‐strain is accelerated, leading to the instability of the structure under the impact load. The research results are expected to provide an adequate theoretical basis for the development and utilization of geothermal resources and underground engineering applications.

This study investigated theshear slip behavior and contact area evolution of rough rock discontinuities with impact shear load. First, the dynamic impact shear numerical simulation of rock samples with real rough rock discontinuities was carried out. Subsequently, the variety rule of slip displacement and velocity of rock discontinuity with impact velocity, confining stress and joint roughness coefficient (JRC) was studied. The variation in contact area and shear stress of rock discontinuity during shear was assessed. Finally, the effect of frictional force on the slip displacement and velocity and the effect of contact area and frictional force on the shear stress distribution were analyzed. The results showed that the slip displacement, velocity and shear stress are rate dependent. The slip displacement and velocity increase as the impact velocity increases and decrease as the confining stress and JRC increase. The contact area and shear stress distribution range of rock discontinuities decrease slightly as the impact velocity increases but increase significantly as the confining stress and JRC increase. The shear stress distribution range of rock discontinuities closely correlates with the contact area. The shear stress in the non‐contact area is zero. The shear stress distribution range increases as the contact area increases. The average shear stress increases as the frictional force increases. Moreover, the slip displacement and velocity of rock discontinuities decrease linearly as the frictional force increases.
