Some factors affecting the growth and yield of winter wheat grown as a third cereal with much or negligible take-all

Abstract: Winter wheat cv. Avalon was sown in autumn 1981, 1982 and 1983 on a clay loam soil following two cereal crops. Multifactorial experiments tested the effects of combinations of the following eight factors, each at two levels: rotation, sowing date, timing of nitrogen, amount of nitrogen, growth regulator, pesticide, spring fungicide and summer fungicide. The best 16-plot mean grain yields in 1982-4 were respectively 8-7, 10-2 and 11-1 t/ha. Rotation had the largest effect on grain yield. Wheat following barley w… Show more

“…Averaged over all years and all factors, wheat following OSR realized a higher grain yield compared with wheat following wheat (Table 5), a fact, which is corresponding well with results from other experiments (e.g. Zimmermann, 1984;Widdowson et al, 1985;Prew et al, 1986;McEwen et al, 1989;Christen, 1998). The yield of the third wheat crop, following wheat-wheat, achieved the lowest yield, being 20% less than that of the first wheat crop.…”

“…However, even a N supply exceeding the N requirement only partly decreased the yield losses due to an unfavorable preceding crop (combination) (Widdowson et al, 1985;Prew et al, 1986;Panse et al, 1994). Our results indicated that both, the first N application at the beginning of growth in spring and also the second N application at stem elongation, should be increased in order to reduce yield losses in wheat following wheat due to a lower ear density.…”

“…However, for this paper the growth of the cereal has been taken into account. Data from Prew et al (1986) were used to estimate the surface area of the crop for each month of the year and deposition velocities from those for bare soil to a full crop Erisman et al (1994) Heathland…”
