Oil well drilling towers have different operating modes during a real operation, like drilling, tripping, and reaming. Each mode involves certain external disturbances and uncertainties. In this study, using the nonlinear model for the modes of the operation, robust and/or adaptive control systems are designed based on the models. These control strategies include five types of controllers: cascaded proportional–integral–derivative, active disturbance rejection controller, loop shaping, feedback error learning, and sliding mode controller. The study presents the design process of these controllers and evaluates the performances of the proposed control systems to track the reference signal and reject the uncertain forces including the parametric uncertainties and the external disturbances. This comparison is based on the mathematical performance measures and energy consumption. In addition, three architectures are presented to control the weight on bit during drilling process, and also to maintain a preset constant weight on bit, two control approaches are designed and presented.

The specific drilling energy and penetration rate are very important performance parameters for drilling. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of operational machine parameters and rock properties on drilling performance parameters for rotary core drilling conditions. For this purpose, a rotary core drilling test machine was used to measure drilling performance, taking into account the operational machine parameters (weight on the bit, rotation speed, torque, power of the machine, etc.). The experiments were carried out using 12 different operational conditions, consisting of 3 different rotational speeds (210, 330, and 470 rpm) and 4 different dead loads (50, 70, 90, and 110 kg) on 16 rock samples during the core drilling of rocks with different geological origins, i.e., igneous, sedimentary clastic, and sedimentary carbonated. Subsequently, specific energy values were derived from the experimental values of mechanical and electrical characteristics using relevant empirical models. Among the empirical calculations, the specific energy obtained from the electrical measurements indicates that it is more stable than that of the other empirical approaches. On the other hand, as expected, there is a strong inverse relationship between specific drilling energy and penetration rate. Moreover, regression analysis between the specific energy (470 rpm and 70 kg load) and the properties of the rock samples presents a strong relationship. It is concluded that drilling rate index, Equotip hardness, and applied load are the most influential factors on the drilling performance of rotary drilling. In addition, optimum drilling performance is noted when the penetration rate reaches 1 m/h.

Purpose. The objective of this study is to determine the best operating conditions for the most notable drilling parameters (i.e. weight on bit (WOB), rotary drilling speed (RPM), and characteristics of drilling fluid) using field data obtained from El-Sharara Oil Field.Methods. The used data has been extracted from daily drilling reports of well named (NC-186/K04h) field. Such data contains information about the geological formations, casing strings, drill-bits, fuel consumption, flow rate of drilling fluid and other drilling parameters.Findings. The results reveal that, the lower geological formations of El-Sharara Oil Field, the harder are the upper formations. Therefore, it is recommended to apply heavy loads (i.e. WOB of 45000 lb) with low drilling speed (i.e. 100 rpm) in the lower formations; and to apply small loads (i.e. WOB of 19000 lb) with high drilling speed (i.e. 160 rpm) in the upper formations.Originality. This study evaluates the performance of drilling operation based on the interaction between rock formations and machine drilling parameters. Practical implications.Understanding such interaction between rock formations and machine drilling parameters will remarkably improve the rate of penetration (ROP) in the related geological formations. Consequently, the overall drilling costs will be reduced in terms of drilling time, life of drill-bit and fuel consumption.
