“…Although not introduced by humans to Mexico, from the time of its release in the southeast of the United States, this species has expanded rapidly within Mexico and this expansion has been favoured by the conversion of extensive zones, once covered by tropical forest, to cattle pastures. The very recent publication of an article by BARBERO & LOPEZ- GUERRERO (1992) about 'the expansion of D. gazella in Mexico makes it unnecessary to describe the process here. The first published capture for the Mexican Coastal Plains of the Gulf is from 1981 (LAGO et al 1984), far to the north of our study zone.…”

“…gazella is a species of Indoafrican origin with an exceptional capacity for both dispersal and colonization. It has been used with great success by various agricultural services for the purpose of limiting the accumulation of cow dung (see the recent synthesis and bibliographic references in BARBERO & LOPEZ-GUERRERO 1992). Its great capacity for colonization is the result of its wide tolerance to environmental conditions and its high rate of reproduction (the highest known for a Scarabaeinae species).…”
