Some biochemical and histochemical aspects in hyperplasia and carcinoma of the human prostate

Abstract

A study of histochemical and biochemical enzyme activity determination in hyperplastic and untreated carcinomatous prostatic tissue is presented. The histochemical results are in agreement with earlier investigations and the biochemical findings corroborate grossly the histochemical findings. A comparison of conventional estrogen therapy to Estramustine phosphate, (EstracytR), therapy is discussed from both the histochemical and biochemical points of view. The enzyme activity quotient, acid phosphatase lo 0-glucuronidase, is pointed out as a possible indicator in following the therapeutic response, and in determination of the origin of metastases. Lipofuscin pigment is demonstrated to a much higher frequency after Estracyt treatment than after conventional estrogen treatment. This indicates that this substance might have an intracellular effect which is different and more pronounced that than of estrogen.
