BackgroundRasbora tawarensis is an endemic freshwater fish in Lake Laut Tawar, Aceh Province, Indonesia. Unfortunately, its status is regarded as critical endangered with populations decreasing in recent years. To date no information on the spawning activities of the fish are available. Therefore, this study provides a contribution to the knowledge on reproductive biology of R. tawarensis especially on spawning seasons as well as basic information for conservation of the species.MethodsMonthly sampling was conducted from April 2008 to March 2009 by using selective gillnets. The gonadosomatic index, size composition and sex ratio were assessed. The gonadal development was evaluated based on macroscopic and microscopic examinations of the gonads.ResultsThe gonadosomatic index (GSI) varied between 6.65 to 18.16 in female and 4.94 to 8.56 for male. GSI of the female R. tawarensis was higher in March, September and December indicating the onset of reproductive seasons, the GSI and oocyte size being directly correlated with gonadal development stages. Although, a greater proportion of mature male than female was detected during the study, the sex ratio showed that the overall number of female was higher than male. The ovaries had multiple oocyte size classes at every stage of gonadal development, thus R. tawarensis can be classified as a group synchronous spawner or a fractional multiple spawner.ConclusionThe spawning seasons of R. tawarensis were three times a year and September being the peak of the reproductive season and the female was the predominant sex. This species is classified as a group synchronous spawner.

Protopterus annectens a fait l'objet de très peu d'études au Burkina Faso. Pourtant, cette espèce est très bien connue des populations locales grâce à sa faculté d'hibernation au niveau des berges des plans d'eau. C'est dans le but de palier à ce gap d'informations que cette étude a été menée sur l'âge et la croissance de cette espèce pendant ces deux états écologiques différents à savoir en état d'hibernation et de non hibernation. Pendant la même période, deux sites ont été choisis pour cette étude. Il s'agit de la retenue d'eau du barrage n ⁰ 3 de Ouagadougou où l'espèce hibernait et celle du barrage de Boura ou elle vivait librement dans l'eau. Ainsi les travaux de scalimétrie ont montré que les individus en hibernation au barrage n⁰3 de Ouagadougou étaient âgés de 1 à 3 ans tandis que ceux du barrage de Boura, de 1 à 2 ans. L'étude a aussi montré que l'espèce a une croissance isométrique dans le barrage n°3 de Ouagadougou et une croissance allométrique négative dans le barrage de Boura. Les paramètres de croissance et d'exploitation estimés à l'aide de l'équation de Von Bertalanffy indiquent au barrage urbain n°3 de Ouagadougou, L ∞ = 71,620 cm, K=0,37 an-1 , t 0 =-0,12 ans et au barrage de Boura, L ∞ = 58,011cm, K=0,99 an-1 , t 0 =-0,001 ans. La mortalité totale (Z) et le taux d'exploitation (E) sont respectivement de 3,25 an-1 et 0,56 au barrage de Boura, d'où une surexploitation de l'espèce au niveau du barrage de Boura.

This study was conducted to evaluate the morphological variation of Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man, 1879) from the Nyatoh River, Terengganu state, Malaysia. Three hundred and thirty-five samples of M. rosenbergii comprising 41.5% males and 58.5% females were collected from August 2019 to October 2020. The bulk of the sample collection had small claws (69.1%), whereas those with orange and blue claws constituted 19.1% and 11.8%, respectively. The result obtained from the analysis of nine sets of morphometric data for both sexes showed univariate morphometric similarities and wide overlap in principal component analysis (PCA) without separation into unique clusters. Comparison by claw-type showed significant variation in the univariate analysis of the morphometric parameters measured in the following order: blue claw > orange claw > small claw. PCA did not cluster the prawns into different groups, hence multivariate analysis of morphometric parameters cannot be used to distinguish the prawn by claw type should the appendages be lost. Comparisons of the length-weight relationship data and condition factor suggest that the Terengganu River prawn population had a positive allometric growth pattern and were in good condition. The Pearson’s correlation analysis also showed a largely positive relationship between the morphometric data collected (with a few exceptions in the different morphotypes). The morphological measurements could not therefore be used to discriminate the sex and claw-type of freshwater prawn M. rosenbergii in the Nyatoh River.
