Literary Style in the Arabic Translation of Charlotte Bronte’s The Professor

This article deals with the translation of stylistic features in Charlotte Bronte’s The Professor into Arabic. Aspects of Bronte’s versatile style include the French air (French words, expressions and stretches of French language), figurative language, and lexis with intellectual and social significance. Bronte’s text is compared with a published Arabic translation by Basil Saleem. The researchers highlight the translator’s attempts to make the text flow smoothly to engage Arab readers in Bronte’s universally appealing novel. The target text (TT) intimates modifications in author-text-reader relationships. The novelist’s bilingualism, which is noticed in using French language at several junctures in the novel, is mostly dispensed with in the TT. In addition, imagery embedded in Bronte’s figurative language is modified. Shifts can also be noticed in lexis conveying various associations. It is highlighted that translation is a sort of creative linguistic and cultural mediation. Keywords: Literary Style, Fiction Translation, Charlotte Bronte, The Professor, Victorian Fiction.

The present study aimed to highlight addition as a translation strategy adopted by literary translators. It also aimed to examine addition with reference to an Arabic translation of the short story “The Sniper” written by O’Flaherty (1923). The researchers adopted the translation-by-addition strategy proposed by Dickins et al (2017) as the theoretical framework for their study. They also conducted a contrastive analysis and developed a taxonomy of types of addition which were identified as per the analysis. The findings revealed that the Arabic translation exhibited numerous examples of addition some of which did not change the meaning, some slightly changed the meaning and others changed the meaning. Based on the findings, the researchers recommend that further research be done on addition as a translation strategy followed by literary and non-literary translators to confirm or challenge the findings of this study.

Translator-oriented Translation Criticism: The Case of Roger Allen’s Translation of Khan al-Khalili

Situated within translator studies, the present paper adopts Berman’s (1995) translator-oriented approach to translation criticism to analyze the English translation of Naguib Mahfouz’s Khan al-Khalili by Roger Allen. The paper analyzes two sets of data related not only to the translated novel but also to the translator as a cultural agent. The first set includes a collection of paratexts produced by Allen, including articles, interviews, introductions, and afterwords. The second set of data includes the Arabic and English versions of Khan al-Khalili. The paratextual data was analyzed to reveal Allen's translating position, horizon, and project, while the second set was analyzed to reveal the extent to which Allen's project is aligned with his translation of Khan al-Khalili. The result of the analysis revealed that Allen’s project is aligned with his translation, which produced a foreignized version of the novel that introduces the reader to Arab culture.
