Somatosensory evoked potentials of median and tibial nerves in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) under captivity: influence of ontogenic status in neonatal, infant, young, adult, and senile stages

Abstract: Differences found in signals generated by the nervous system in response to somatosensory stimuli among the studied groups are thought to be developmental in origin, as the most remarkable deviations were seen in younger monkeys.

“…The 20 male M. mulatta monkeys used were held in captivity at the It is widely documented that SEP registry is sensitive to certain factors such as age, sex, type registry, but to date there is a great controversy regarding use of anesthetics at the time of registration. 10,[21][22][23][24] Based on that fact only males were used in this study to be able to evaluate the effect of age as a first approximation in the standardization of SEP and the effect of this anesthetic mixture without the hormonal variations that the females suffer throughout the menstrual period, where changes in electrical activity have been described in relation to the phase of the menstrual cycle. 10,18,21,31 Each experimental group included 4 male rhesus monkeys, di- The ground was placed on the mastoids.…”

“…The rhesus monkeys were provided by Proyecto Camina foundation, and they were handled according to the Guide for the Care and Use of Experimental Animals [14] and the NOM-062-ZOO-1999. The animals came from a colony previously described by Hernandez-Godinez et al [6]. The animals were anesthetized with tiletamine/zolazepam (Zoletil 50; 15 mg/ kg i.p.…”
