Somatic and Visceral Solitary Fibrous Tumors in the Abdomen and Pelvis: Cross-sectional Imaging Spectrum

Abstract: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are a unique group of mesenchymal neoplasms of fibroblastic or myofibroblastic origin. These tumors were originally described as "benign fibrous mesotheliomas" of the pleural cavity and were erroneously thought to be confined to the serosal surfaces (due to a putative mesothelial or submesothelial origin). It is now established that SFTs are ubiquitous neoplasms with both pleural and extrapleural distribution. Extrapleural SFTs commonly occur in middle-aged adults and manifest as… Show more

“…On CT scan, SFT typically appear as a smooth, well-defined mass with occasional calcifications. While they are hypervascular, there may be areas of non-enhancement corresponding to a cyst or necrosis [7][8]. This was the case in our patient and the mass was initially believed to be a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), the most common mesenchymal neoplasm in the gastrointestinal tract.…”

“…7,9,10 Presacral SFTs are usually large at the time of detection and exert a mass effect on neighbor organs and structures; they appear well-circumscribed, with smooth or lobulated contour, and discrete margins on CT and MR images. SFTs have an intermediate signal on both T1-weighted MRI and T2-weighted MRI; in the latter sequence, however, signal intensity depends on cellularity, fibrosis, cystic changes, necrosis.…”

“…Internal heterogeneity may be present secondary to necrosis, haemorrhage and cystic or myxoid degeneration. 36,38 Gastrointestinal stromal tumour Gastrointestinal stromal tumour is the most common mesenchymal neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract, most frequently seen in the stomach and small bowel, with rare occurrence in the anorectal region. 6 These neoplasms arise from the outer muscular layer and are typically exophytic.…”
