Somatic Acupoint Stimulation for Cancer‐Related Sleep Disturbance: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract: Aim. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze and synthesize available evidence for the effects of somatic acupoint stimulation (SAS) on cancer-related sleep disturbance in adults with cancer. Methods. Nine databases and four clinical trial registries were searched from their inception to July 2019 to identify potential articles and registered trials. Two authors independently extracted data and appraised the methodological quality of the included studies. The included studies could not be subjected to… Show more

“…In acupuncture, a thin and strong metal needle is inserted into a specific anatomical part of the skin, and moxibustion is used as the burning-moxa to stimulate the acupuncture points or specific parts of the body. AM has been widely used to relieve nausea, [42][43][44] vomiting, [42][43][44] pain, [45][46][47][48] insomnia, [47,48] fatigue, [49,50] and other symptoms [51] in cancer patients. It has also been used to treat primary anxiety and depression, and its efficacy has been proven.…”

“…The participants allocated to the true SA group will receive a 7-week self-administered SA intervention, which will be determined based on existing research evidence extracted from systematic reviews (three of which were completed by our study team, with two published33 34 and the other one under review), relevant theories (the inflammatory theory, the Yin-Yang theory and the Zang-Fu organs and meridians theory),23 24 practice standards35 36 and experts’ consensus. Eleven acupoints will be used as the therapeutic acupoints formula: Zusanli (ST36), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Taixi (KI3), Hegu (LI4), Neiguan (PC6), Shenmen (HT7), Baihui (GV20), Qihai (CV6), Guanyuan (CV4), Yintang (EX-HN3) and Taichong (LR3).…”

“…Since sleep disturbance in cancer patients is common and chronic, it is necessary to explore nonpharmacological therapy. Recently, the therapeutic effect of several nonpharmacological therapies on improving sleep disturbance in cancer patients has been reported, including cognitive intervention [21], aerobic exercise [22], and somatic acupoints stimulation [23]. e positive effect of auricular acupressure on improving sleep disturbance has been confirmed by several trials, which has the advantages of simple operation and few side effects [24][25][26].…”
