Lanthanide coordination polymers (Ln-CPs) are potential chemosensors when fabricated to depict a detectable change in optical properties on interaction with target analytes. This work investigates the interaction of nitroaromatic compounds with Ln-CPs leading to induced changes in fluorescence emission intensity, a crucial strategy to develop a selective and sensitive system for the sensing of nitroaromatics. Approaching toward this objective, solvothermal reactions of 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic ( 2,5-TDC) acid, 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-Phen), and Ln(NO 3 ) 3 •xH 2 O are carried out to assemble eight Ln(III) coordination polymers [Ln 2 (2,5-TDC) 3 (1,10-Phen) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ] [Ln = Pr (1), Nd (2)], {[Tb(2,5-TDC) 1.5 (1,10-Phen)(H 2 O)]• DMF} (3), and [Ln(2,5-TDC) 1.5 (1,10-Phen)]•xH 2 O (Ln = Tb (4), Dy ( 5), Ho (6), Er (7), and Yb (8)); x = 0 for CP 4, 5, 6, and 8 and x = 1 for CP 7 with two different space groups and dimensions. The as-synthesized polymers 1−8 are characterized by powder X-ray crystallography, infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The structure-corroborated density functional theory (DFT) studies are done on the selected CPs to investigate the interactions between different structural motifs of the assembled CPs. The luminescence properties of CP 4 are explored in detail and are found to be highly sensitive for the detection of p-nitrotoluene as indicated by the most intensive fluorescence quenching with the lowest limit of detection (0.88 ppm) and high quenching constant (4.3 × 10 4 M −1 ). Other nitro compounds (viz., o-nitrobenzaldehyde, m-nitroaniline, picric acid, mdinitrobenzene, p-nitrophenol, and p-nitroaniline) are also screened for potential sensing by CP 4.

In this work, we have prepared two new sulfur CPs with group 12 transition metals, namely, [Zn (NCS)Cl(μ2‐L)]n (1) and [Hg (SCN)2(μ2‐L)]n (3). [Cd (NCS)Cl(μ2‐L)]n (2), which is isostructural with 1, was synthesized for a comparison from our published work. These compounds have been characterized by FT‐IR, UV–Vis, powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), elemental analysis (CHNS), scanning electron microscopy (Fe‐SEM), TGA, BET, and single‐crystal X‐ray analysis for 1 and 3. In the structure of all polymers, the bbit ligand [L = bbit = 1,1‐bis(3‐methyl‐4‐imidazoline‐2‐thion)butane] is bridged between metal centers by the anti‐anti‐anti conformation to form an infinite 1D zigzag chain. The considered polymers were used for the removal of a substantial amount of I2 from cyclohexane solution. Despite the nonporous and low dimensional frameworks of title polymers, their maximum iodine adsorption capacities were notable and in order of 817.68, 906.48, and 911.08 mg/g for polymers 1–3, respectively, with an extraordinary stability toward iodine. The capacity of micro‐sized structures was almost double as compared with their bulk ones.

An organic-inorganic hybrid Pb(II)-based 1D coordination polymer, {[Pb(NSB) NO 3 .DMF]} n (CP) (H-NSB = isonicotinic acid (2-hydroxy-naphthalen-1-ylmethylene)-hydrazide; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), is structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction measurement and other spectroscopic data. The structure shows that the ligand, H-NSB serves as a monoanionic tetradentate N 2 O 2 chelating linker of μ 3 -κN,κO;κO,N,O type, where κO (phenolato-O) brings two Pb(II) centres together and the tridentate NO 2 unit chelates (κO,N,O) with one Pb(II) unit followed by its pyridyl-N links (κN) with nearest Pb(II) centre for propagating as a seven coordinated distorted pentagonal bi-pyramidal PbO 5 N 2 core (one O donor comes from DMF and another O from NO 3 À ). Thus, 1D chain is constructed that is thermally stable.The noncovalent interactions (π … π, H-bonding and C-H … π) amongst the 1D chains make supramolecular 3D architecture. The Hirshfeld surface analysis approves the existence of several noncovalent interactions for the formation of 3D network. The reasonable band gap of 3.04 eV for the CP lies in the semiconducting region, which simulates fabrication of photoelectrochemical device with high magnitude of photocurrent (current density: $2.5 μA cm À2 ). Mott-Schottky analysis indicates the n-type semiconducting behaviour, and chronoamperometry plot also shows the stability of the material against photo corrosion. Present elucidation would decipher an encouraging pathway for harvesting next-generation energy resources based on a novel Pb(II)-naphthylisonicotinohydrazide Schiff base-based CP.
