Solvent Polarity Governs Ultrafast Structural Dynamics: A Case Study of 4-Dimethylamino-4′-carbomethoxydiphenylacetylene

Abstract: The compound 4-dimethylamino-4′-carbomethoxydiphenylacetylene (DACM-DPA) is a donor-π-acceptor system that exhibits significant charge transfer character in the excited state in polar solvents. Femtosecond transient absorption measurements in n-hexane, acetonitrile, and methanol exhibit excitedstate lifetimes of >2 ns, ∼500 ps, and ∼30 ps, respectively. Femtosecond Raman measurements of DACM-DPA elucidated the intricate structural dynamics during the excited-state evolution by revealing distinct vibrational si… Show more

“…12–14 The pump-initiated excited-state conformation relaxes to a new state characterized by the conformational change entailing twisted or planar intramolecular charge transfer (TICT/PICT) when there is an intramolecular rotation. 14–23 The excited-state conformational change can thus in turn determine the unique photophysical and photochemical properties. 24…”

“…That is, while an increase in solvent polarity induces bathochromic uorescence shis, it does not affect the absorption. [14][15][16][17] This feature allows excitation at the same wavelength regardless the solvating media.…”
