Solvent-Free Lipid Bilayer Model Using Multiscale Coarse-Graining

Abstract: The multiscale coarse-graining (MS-CG) approach developed in our previous work is extended here to model solvent-free lipid bilayers. The water (solvent) molecules are completely integrated out of the coarse-grained (CG) effective force field. The MS-CG force field, a sum of pairwise central forces, accurately approximates the many-body potential of mean force in the coarse-grained coordinates. It thus incorporates both energetic and entropic contributions. To improve the stability and elastic properties of th… Show more

“…Izvekov and Voth 59 adapted their variational coarse graining ͑which creates a many-body potential for a coarse-grained unit by fitting forces from a finer grained model͒ to the case of implicit solvent lipid models. As well, Boltzmann-inversion procedures may also be employed systematically to create a coarse-grained from a finer grained model.…”

“…However, the membrane also contains cyto- and nucleoskeletal elements that can transmit shear, which must be accounted for by incorporating a solid component. Parameters were based on results found by atomistic simulations (Izvekov and Voth 2009; Ovalle-García et al 2011; Patra et al 2003). …”

“…The solvent-free coarse-graining approach [84] does not work well for flexible macromolecules in solution because of the significant configurational entropy loss from the absence of explicit solvent molecules. To overcome this problem, the configurational entropy was restored by reintroducing coarse-grained solvent molecules to the system.…”
