Solvent extraction-spectrophotometric determination of anionic surfactants with ethyl violet

Abstract: Several cationic dyes were evaluated as reagents for the spectrophotometrlc determination of anionic surfactants. Of the dyes examined, ethyl violet was the most useful reagent. By use of this dye, trace amounts of anionic surfactants could be extracted Into benzene and toluene In a single extraction and determined spectrophotometrlcally at 615 nm; the molar absorptivity was about 1 X 10s L mol-1 cm-1 and the absorbance of the reagent blank was 0.01. The method could be applied to the determination of parts-pe… Show more

“…The number counter ions of (8) and (9) are mostly in parenthesis sulfate anion corresponds to the and that of (11) is the right side nitrogen, but the charge can exist on the left side and the sulfur atom can also show the positive charge. So the positive charge of Methylene Blue (1) is distributed over the whole ion.…”

“…Among the sphere type reagents, tetraphenylarsonium (7) and tetraphenylborate (10) are colorless, while Cu(I) neocuproine chelate cation (8) and Fe(II) 4-chloro-2-nitrosophenol chelate anion (11) are colored. If the colored chelate ion and an oppositely charged ion-association reagent have the same Amax (wavelength at maximum absorption), the sensitivity of the extraction-spectrophotometry will be greatly increased.…”

“…Recently, Higuchi et al 3 have developed a cationic dye more extractable than Methylene Blue. Motomizu et al 4 have also developed a solvent extraction-spectrophotometric method for anionic surfactants with Ethyl Violet: the method needs only a single extraction, and the its molar absorptivity of ion associate is about 1X1051 mol-' cm'.…”
