End‐of‐life fluorescent lamps are becoming essential in the rare earths (REEs) field and suppose a feasible secondary source for getting them, reducing thus their supply risk. Considering the proved viability of the cationic extractants, the present study aims at establishing a solvent extraction model using di‐(2‐ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) not only based on the individual Ce, Eu, and Y behavior in chloride media, but also bearing in mind the competitive extraction of these metals in Ce/Eu/Y mixtures, depending on the media variables. Furthermore, the model allow determining the optimal REEs separation conditions. The results disclose that Y could be separated from the mixture using 0.1 mol/L D2EHPA, acidity above of 3 mol/L of protons and chloride concentrations higher than 4 mol/L.

To substantially simplify the process and provide a green alternative for scandium separation, novel polymer-supported extractants containing di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphonate and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphonate, [D201][DEHP] and [D201] [C272] are proposed because they demonstrate improved adsorption capacity and selectivity toward scandium(III). Scandium(III) adsorption is significantly affected by the solution pH, with the maximum adsorption occurring at a pH of approximately 0.78. The batch adsorption data fit well with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. A combination of the Fourier transform infrared and XPS spectra suggest that the complexation of oxygen atoms in phosphate groups with scandium(III) is the predominant adsorption mechanism. Additionally, the two resins were used to recover scandium from leaching liquor of nickel laterite ore. [D201][DEHP] exhibits unusual selectivity for scandium and low competitive behavior with other metals, thus increasing its market potential. Scandium can be recovered as a byproduct during nickel and cobalt extraction operations. Solvent extraction experiments have been performed to separate Nd and Pr from chloride leaching solution of monazite sand using PC88A and D2EHPA. For this purpose, the effect of the saponification of PC88A and D2EHPA on the extraction and separation of the two metals were studied by varying the pH of aqueous solution. In the experimental ranges conducted in this study, the distribution coefficients of Nd were higher than those of Pr and separation factor value increased with the increase of solution pH. Saponification of PC88A enhanced the distribution coefficients of Nd and Pr as well as the separation factor. Saponification of D2EHPA had some effect on the extraction of the two metals but little effect on the separation factor.
