Solvent exposure in construction and maintenance painting.

Abstract: Wickstrom, MD4RIALA R, KALLIOKOSKI P, PYY L, WICKSTR~M G. Solvent exposure in construction and maintenance painting. Scand J Work Environ Health 10 (1984) 263-266. Exposure to solvents in interior house painting was determined by industrial hygiene surveys and questionnaires on work history. Painting work was observed in 92 work situations at 18 sites, mainly during maintenance work. The effects of the size of the work area, the volume of air, the type of paint, the amount used, the method of application, and … Show more

“…Among the earliest observations of workers exposed to volatile hydrocarbons was evidence of CNS effects (Battig et al 1956, Riala et al 1984. In early studies to characterize the potential for overexposure, Patty and Yant (1929) documented the effects of short-term, high-level exposures to volatile hydrocarbons including n-pentane, n-hexane, and n-heptane.…”

“…Although the epoxy paints represented a relatively small fraction of total solvent exposure, the use of these paints accounted for the majority of the incidents of overexposure which were relatively common during that period of time. As documented by Riala et al (1984), between 1960 and 1973, feelings of drunkenness (presumably an indication of acute CNS depression) were estimated to have occurred on average 46 times/year, with the frequency dropping to 27 times/year between 1974 . Between 1960and 1973, 8% of the painters reported experiencing drunkenness 100 or more times/year.…”
