a b s t r a c tThe influences of solvent system on the hydrodechlorination (HDC) of transformer oil-contained PCBs with H 2 over Pd/C catalyst were studied. The addition of water in solvent system significantly accelerated the HDC reaction, which suggested its critical role for enabling Pd/C catalyst to keep high activity and stability. The mechanism of this phenomenon was studied through catalyst characterization (TEM, XRD and XPS), and the change of surface composition of Pd/C catalyst in different solvent in the HDC reaction was raveled. Above results indicated that water in isopropanol-water prevented NaCl accumulating on the surface of catalyst, which avoided the decline in activity and stability of the catalyst. On the basis of these studies, isopropanol-water (60/40, v/v) solvent system was developed to dispose high concentration transformer oil-contained PCBs, where the chloride atom removal ratio of transformer oil-contained PCBs at 2% (w/w) and 5% (w/w) concentration could reach 95.2% and 88.0% for 10 h under mild conditions respectively, and the Pd/C could be recovered and reused at least 10 times without any loss of catalytic activity.

Existential state of solutes substantially affects the efficiency and direction of various chemical and biological processes, about which current consensus is still limited at macro and micro levels. At the trace level, solutes assume a pivotal role across a spectrum of critical fields. However, their existential states, especially at interfaces, remain largely elusive. Herein, an exceptional evolution of solute molecules is unveiled from micro to trace, solution to interface, with the aid of surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy, extinction, DLS and theoretical simulations. Given predominant existence of monomers within the solution, these aggregates dominate the interfacial behavior of solute molecules. Moreover, a universal, aggregate‐controlled mechanism is demonstrated that aggregates triggered by cosolvent, which can dramatically promote efficiency of catalytic reactions. The results provide novel insights into the interaction mechanisms between reactants and catalysts, potentially offering fresh perspectives for the manipulation of multiphase catalysis and related biological processes.

As halogenated waste is xenobiotic with no analogous compounds in nature, there is no natural means of ameliorating the negative environmental impact caused by halo‐organic emissions. The presence of organo‐halogens in effluent discharges is of increasing concern, owing to the mounting evidence of adverse stratospheric ozone, ecological effects, and the impact on public health. There is a pressing need, driven by legislative and financial imperatives, to develop robust and efficient treatment technologies. This Review considers the application of catalytic hydrodechlorination (HDC) as a progressive approach to the conversion and recycling of toxic chloro‐compounds. An overview of the existing treatment technologies is provided with an assessment of the benefits of catalytic HDC over separation/oxidation methodologies. Taking the transformation of chloro‐aromatics, the catalytic HDC of liquid and gas phase reactants is considered in turn with a critical analysis of the pertinent literature. Two “case studies” are considered in detail: i) the liquid phase HDC of chlorophenols over alumina supported palladium, focusing on the critical process and catalyst structural characteristics that influence HDC performance; ii) the gas phase conversion of a range of halogenated (Cl and Br) aromatics over silica supported nickel with an examination of the dehalogenation activity/selectivity response as a function of the nature of the aromatic reactant.
