Solvatochromic polarity parameters for binary mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate with water, methanol, and dimethylsulfoxide

Abstract: Solvatochromic polarity parameters ( , α, β, and π*) for binary mixtures of 1-butyl-3methylimidazolium acetate-ionic liquid, which is a promising solvent of lignocellulosic materials with water, methanol, and dimethylsulfoxide, are determined via UV spectroscopy. A Redlich-Kister (CNIBS/R-K) equation modified for a quasi-ideal binary solvent is used to describe algebraically the dependences between the Dimroth-Reichardt energies, the Kamlet-Taft parameters, and the composition of binary mixtures. The addition … Show more

“…Recently, a paper was published on the solvatochromism of Reichardt betaine (RB; 2,6-diphenyl-4-(2,4,6triphenylpyridinium-1-yl)phenolate) in the same solvent mixture at 25 C. In addition to studying at a single temperature, the emphasis in this publication was to t the Redlich-Kister equation to the data without extracting information about the local composition of the solvation layer of RB. 36…”

“…The obtained spectra were subjected to the Savitzky-Golay smoothening with the subsequent localization of the long-wave absorption band λ max (the precision was not worse than 0.1 nm). The Dimroth-Reichardt energy (kcal/mol) was calculated using the following equation [67]:…”

“…The Kamlet-Taft parameters π* and β were calculated using the literature data on the corresponding coefficients (b, s) for the location of the absorption bands of the studied solvatochromic indicators according to the equations [67]: π * = 0.427(34.12 − ν maxANS )…”

“…One of the most important advantages of ionic liquids is the possibility of targeted tuning of their properties by selection of anion, the nature of which can significantly affect the solvating power and reactivity of ILs [5][6][7]. In order to reduce the cost and viscosity of ionic liquids, molecular solvents, such as dimethyl sulfoxide, are used as additives, which at certain concentration ranges do not radically change the structure and properties of ILs [8]. Polysaccharide (cellulose and hemicellulose) and lignin fractions can be extracted from the obtained solutions of plant biomass by fractional sedimentation with water and some other solvents [9].…”
