Solvated Electron Pairing with Earth Alkaline Metals in THF. 1. Formation and Structure of the Pair with Divalent Magnesium

Abstract: The reactivity of a solvated electron with MgII salts in THF is investigated by pulse radiolysis. With magnesium chloride, no reaction is observed, but when magnesium perchlorate is used, the solvated electron reacts to form a species absorbing in the near-infrared. Conductivity measurements show that neither MgCl2 nor Mg(ClO4)2 is dissociated in THF. Quantum chemical calculations show that the difference in behavior between the two salts can be traced back to the electron affinities of the solutes in the gas … Show more

“…18 A similar phenomenon has been reported experimentally in the case of earth alkaline cations and an excess electron in THF. 10,37 Furthermore, the presence of this shoulder on the spectrum of the solvated electron near a sodium cation has been reported in an experimental study by Gelabert and Gauduel. 9…”

“…[4][5][6][7][8] In such systems, water mediates the effective interactions between the ion and the excess electron and the formation of contact pairs was suggested. 6,9,10 Electron spin echo spectroscopy studies gave indirect information on the structure of the solvation shell of a solvated electron in alkaline glasses and ice. [11][12][13] Recent resonance Raman spectra in bulk water supported these structural findings.…”

“…8,9 Computer simulations are expected to contribute to the understanding of the difference in behavior between the two opposite cases of silver (Ag ϩ ) and sodium cation (Na ϩ ) in the presence of an excess electron in bulk water. A recently developed mixed quantum-classical molecular dynamics ͑QCMD͒ approach, based on adiabatic simulation technique, was used to simulate an excess electron in bulk water.…”

“…Taking into consideration the ability of electrolytes to scavenge free ions, it seems plausible that MgCl 2 , whose dissociation in THF is negligible, 20 can form multiple ions with Li + , as shown in eq. 3 for example.…”
