Solution scattering from colloidal curved plates: barrel tiles, scrolls and spherical patches

Abstract: I provide analytical or semi-analytical expressions for the smallangle scattering of colloidal objects that can be described as curved plates. These models could help characterize a variety of inorganic or biological systems.

“…Thus, the characteristic scattering wave fluctuation curve is caused by the presence of isolated NPLs from the decomposition of sheet stacking structures. 31 Such a result agrees well with the corresponding absorption spectra shown in panel b2 of Figure 1, which exhibit the characteristic absorption doublets at 373/ 393 nm. In panel a3 of Figure 1, the scattering fluctuation at low q tends to weaken gradually by heating the sample from 170 to 240 °C, which is attributed to the decomposition of NPLs.…”

“…For the sample at 250 °C/5 min, only the unified model is used for construction. The form factor of cylinder platelets provides the various sizes of 2D particles, 31 and the parameters of dMSCs derived from the unified model provide the size and shape of 0D particles in the solution system, with more details shown in the Supporting Information. The simulation and verification of the fluctuation signal by different size parameters for NPLs are shown in Figures S2-1 of the Supporting Information.…”

“…We attribute these oscillations to the bending of the NPLs which depart from their flat geometry to yield tubes or scrolls as was shown previously. 12−14 To confirm this hypothesis, we computed the form factor of curved platelets with reasonable dimensions 44 (see Supporting Information for the calculation details) and noticed that indeed, marked oscillations appear in the 0.1−1 nm −1 region of the SAXS pattern when the radius of curvature is low enough. For a 30 × 60 nm plate, oscillations start to appear when the radius of curvature goes below 20 nm.…”
