Solution Properties of a Fluorinated Alkyl Methacrylate Polymer in Carbon Dioxide

Abstract: The solution properties of a fluorinated alkyl methacrylate, poly(1,1,2,2-tetrahydroperfluorooctyl methacrylate) (PFOMA), in liquid and supercritical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) were studied by static and dynamic light scattering. The solvent quality of CO 2 was found to improve with increasing temperature and CO 2 density as exhibited by an increase of the second virial coefficient. Both the hydrodynamic radius expansion factor and the second virial coefficient of PFOMA solution were found to be functions of a sin… Show more

“…It was found that the thicknesses of the dry brushes after oxidative polymerization increased by 77% ( Figure 5 ). The monomer unit length in saturated polymers was estimated to be 0.26 nm [ 62 ], while in case of polythiophene this was around 0.39 nm. Thus, the formation of Poly(ProDOT) chains should force the formed ladder-like chains to adopt a more extended conformation compared to that of ProDOT-Poly(MM) brushes.…”

“…The correspondence between the size of the cube and the corresponding scale in real polymeric materials can be roughly estimated using the length of the Kuhn segment which corresponds to the averaged bond length in BFM. For example, the Kuhn’s length for PMMA is nm [ 158 ] leading to the conclusion that the volume of the cube used to calculate V is approximately [ 157 ].…”

“…In this work, we used the Kuhn segment molecu-lar weights 35,36 , average amorphous densities 36,37 , and glass transition temperatures 37,38 for both blocks to parameterize the coarse-grained model to describe a poly(methyl methacrylate)-block -poly(n-butyl acrylate)block -poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA-b-PnBA-b-PMMA) polymer system. The PMMA-b-PnBA-b-PMMA system was chosen for this work because it forms well-ordered morphologies and can be synthesized via controlled radical chemistries that are compatible with the widely-studied spiropyran mechanophores 21,39 .…”
