“…Although hsCRP has been shown to decrease after obesity surgery [41], it is possible that it may not be as sensitive as sTWEAK. In fact, the latter better predicted the presence of carotid atherosclerotic plaques in patients with chronic kidney disease [42] and in asymptomatic subjects [33].…”

“…The circulating concentrations of sTWEAK are a useful marker of endothelial integrity and the atherosclerotic process, as arterial pathological conditions upregulate Fn14 expression [17] -the TWEAK receptor -and consequently decrease its circulating levels [18]. sTWEAK concentrations are independently and negatively associated with cIMT in asymptomatic subjects, gradually decreasing as the number of atherosclerotic plaques increases [33] and with the presence of coronary artery disease [20,34]. Severely obese subjects -who have a high cardiovascular disease risk -show reduced sTWEAK levels, which increase after obesity surgery in the majority of patients [35].…”

“…However, recently it is postulated that serum sTWEAK levels differ due to the presence or absence of a distinct lesion [14] . Although diminished levels of sTWEAK was reported in patients with atherosclerotic plaques in a multicenter study, the authors also pointed out that sTWEAK levels were negatively correlated with the number of the plaques [24] . So it would not be wrong to suggest that sTWEAK levels may increase in case of an increased risk of CVD but probably decrease in the presence of an apparent lesion.…”

“…In this sense, biobanks, including our REDinREN Biobank, are a valuable tool, because they have competence to develop their own research, which enables them to optimize processes and find easy detection biomarkers to ensure the quality of all sample types. In addition, nine peerreviewed publications have resulted from samples in our biobank, which demonstrates that the samples are of quality that is amenable to downstream research [49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57] .…”
