Soluble Platinum Nanoparticles Ligated by Long‐Chain N‐Heterocyclic Carbenes as Catalysts

Abstract: What is the most significant result of this study? The use of long-chain N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) allowed for the preparation of well-controlled Pt nanoparticles (Pt NPs), and their use as highly soluble nanocatalysts in organic media. Remarkably,o nly the Pt NPs ligated by ab ulky ligand were active for the hydroboration of alkynes.

“…Several PtNPs stabilized by carbenes were prepared and shown to display interesting reactivities. 41,42 When using a 13 C labeled sulfonated NHC, 43 the observation of a 13 C− 195 Pt coupling of 940 Hz demonstrated the coordination of the NHC through the carbene carbon. Furthermore, for 3.8 nm PdNPs stabilized by the same water-soluble NHC, the carbene resonance is found near 600 ppm (very broad) as a result of the presence of a conduction band in the particles.…”

“…To support these results, wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) analyses were conducted on both samples, the colloidal suspension obtained by solubilization of RuCl 3 in water and the chemically reduced and surfactant-stabilized ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru@ HEA16Cl). This technique, widely reported in the literature for NPs of noble metals, 48,49 allows obtaining information on the distribution of metal−metal distances within a homogeneous assembly. Indeed, a well-defined radial distribution function (RDF) corroborates the presence of well-crystallized nanoparticles.…”

“…8,9 The improved stability of NHC-based SAMs have led to their utilization in a wide range of applications, from catalysis to biosensing and surface patterning. [9][10][11] A significant advantage of NHCs over other surface ligands (i.e. thiols and silanes) is their wide chemical tunability.…”
