Soluble P-selectin as a Biomarker for Infection and Survival in Patients With a Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome on the Intensive Care Unit

Abstract: Aims:This study investigated the ability of soluble platelet selectin (sP-selectin) to identify infection and predict 30-day mortality in patients with a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) on the intensive care unit. Methods:Soluble platelet selectin levels were measured daily in the first 48 hours in patients presenting with SIRS. The outcome, proven infection, was established using predefined definitions. The 30-day mortality was retrospectively assessed. Results:In a total of 313 patients with SIR… Show more

“…Although elevated plasma sP-selectin, together with increased plasma glycocalyx-degradation products, was highly suggestive of endothelial activation/injury, we cannot exclude platelet activation as an additional source of sP-selectin. Nevertheless, sP-selectin has been shown to be an important biomarker in several inflammatory/procoagulopathy diseases including systemic inflammatory response syndrome ( 37 , 43 , 44 ).…”

“…Studies have linked inflammatory biomarkers to various diseases; resistin has been linked with diabetes [13], CRP with malaria [12] and P-selectin with systemic inflammatory response syndrome [23]. However, there is paucity of data on their role in schistosomiasis.…”

“…Our assumption that grounded sleeping dampens inflammation is further supported by a general decrease of inflammation markers observed in the GRD group. Of note, the sCAM sP-selectin (Schrijver et al, 2017) remained below the baseline level in the GRD group throughout the observation period, suggesting that grounded sleeping has a beneficial and long-lasting effect on this inflammation marker. sP-selectin is found on activated endothelial cells and platelets and is a crucial factor for leukocyte recruitment to lesion sites (Cleator et al, 2006).…”
