Soluble lutein in combination with brilliant blue as a new dye for chromovitrectomy

Abstract: The new dye deposited on the posterior pole due to its higher density. The ability to stain the ILM was similar to BB. The new dye has ability to stain the vitreous, hyaloid, and especially the ILM satisfactorily. The new dye may be useful during chromovitrectomy.

“…Recently, our group reported use of lutein-based dyes as an alternative for ILM dyeing, with good staining ability and good safety profiles [5][6][7]24]. Future research on the healing process in MH surgery to compare dyes for ILM peeling and innovative adjuvants to improve the healing process and investigate substances that may be helpful to stimulate photoreceptors growth will facilitate understanding and optimize better treatment for MHs.…”

“…A variety of dyes including trypan blue, Brilliant Blue, and luteinbased dyes can be used to aid visualization of the ILM [5][6][7]. The dyes have varying degrees of ILM specificity and may be used sequentially to peel ERMs, if present, and then ILMs [8,9].…”

“…Vitreoretinal surgeons know that a good visualization in any surgery step is essential for our success, that is why we have been staining the vitreous with triamcinolone or lately with Triessence or other stains to visualize better the vitreous strands and their distribution [1-3]. This new technique described here is much better and easier than the other previously described vitreous stains, because it not only stains the vitreous but also shows how the dissection of the posterior hyaloid proceeds and as this dye is the one used to stain the epiretinal macular membrane (ERM) or internal limiting membrane (ILM) it does not add any extra cost or steps.…”
