Soluble gp130 promotes intestinal epithelial hyperplasia during reovirus infection

Abstract: Summary Soluble gp130 (sgp130) has been shown to suppress the inflammatory response of autoimmune pathologies; however, its effects on virus infection are not known. Here, we report that intraperitoneal treatment of mice with sgp130-Fc fusion protein at the time of oral reovirus serotype 3 infection resulted in altered morphopathological changes that were evident by less shortening of intestinal villi length and crypt depth after infection. That the effect mediated by sgp130 treatment was due to an increase in… Show more

“…MSCs secrete a wide range of cytokines and chemokines in response to environmental stimulators [ 68 ]. When MSCs were infected by oncolytic reovirus, TNF-α [ 70 , 71 ] and IL-6 [ 72 , 73 ] released immensely in extracellular vesicles. These pro-inflammatory cytokines are involved in systemic inflammation and can promote both apoptosis and necrosis.…”

“…The soluble gp130 (sgp130) in the plasma may function as an endogenous antagonist to IL-6 28 . Increasing evidence suggests that sgp130 is a potential therapeutic to reduce inflammation 28 - 31 . In addition, gp130 is required for production of IL-21 primarily from CD4+ and CD8+ T cells for viral control during chronic infection 31 - 33 .…”

However, adversely, the sgp130 is significantly associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) in humans 34 .…”

“…Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) plays an essential role in maintaining vascular homeostasis. Deficiency in eNOS expression coupled with concomitant activation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) triggers highly reactive nitrogen species (RNS) formation, thus, leading to oxidative stress and accelerated retinopathy [40]. PLXDC2 (Plexin domain-containing protein 2), also known as TEM7R (tumor endothelial marker seven-related protein), has been implicated in neurogenesis and angiogenesis [19,41].…”
