Soluble CD40 in plasma and malignant pleural effusion with non‐small cell lung cancer: A potential marker of prognosis

Abstract: ObjectiveSoluble CD40 (sCD40) is a potential modulator for both antitumor responses and CD40-based immunotherapy; however the levels and significance of sCD40 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with malignant pleural effusion are unknown.MethodsForty-eight patients with lung cancer were treated in our institutions from January 2008 to January 2010. Peripheral blood and pleural effusion samples were collected from each subject. sCD40 levels in plasma and malignant pleural effusions supernatant were … Show more

“…163 Soluble CD40 (sCD40) levels are increased in MPE and are indicative of poor prognosis. 164 High concentrations of sCD40 inhibit B cell function by competing for CD154 on T lymphocytes, limiting T cell help and promoting another means of immune evasion. 164 B cell B7-H4 expression is also elevated and is associated with poor prognosis for patients with metastatic pleural adenocarcinoma.…”

“…Together with their ligands, these molecules have important role to play in tumor immune response and therefore make excellent candidates as immunotherapeutic targets. Elevated levels of the soluble isoforms of some of these TNF superfamily members have been linked to poor disease prognosis in cancer patients . Therefore, extensive studies need to be undertaken to further characterize these soluble isoforms in cancer.…”
