Soluble Carbohydrates in White Lupin Seeds Matured at 13 and 28°C

Abstract: Maturation of white lupin seed (Lupinus albus L. cv. Ultra) at 28°C results in later flowering and reduced seed yield in plants grown from these seed compared with plants grown from seed matured at 13°. The objectives of this study were to determine the changes in seed mass and soluble carbohydrates of white lupin seed as affected by seed maturation temperature. Fourteen soluble carbohydrates were identified and quantified by high resolution gas chromatography of the trimethylsilylimidazole‐derivatization prod… Show more

“…Primarily, stored carbohydrates serve as an energy source that supports germination and seedling growth (Bonfil 1998;Górecki et al 1996;Kitajima 2003;Obendorf et al 2009;Young et al 1997). Carbohydrates may also act as signaling molecules involved in the regulation and integration of several important biochemical pathways that affect germination, seed dormancy and seed reserve mobilization (Finkelstein and Lynch 2000;Karrer and Rodriguez 1992;Perata et al 1997).…”

Sim i larly the results ob tained by Górecki et al (1996), sug gest that seeds of white lu pin ma tur ing at high tem per a ture (con stant 28 °C) or high/low tem per a ture con ditions (28 °C/13 °C) on av er age ac cu mu late more stachyose than seeds ma tur ing at ei ther low tem pera ture (13 °C /13 °C) or low-high tem per a ture (13°C /28 °C), how ever these differences were not statistically significant.…”

“…In deed, the level of sol -u ble car bo hy drates in buck wheat seeds de vel op ing at 18 °C was sig nif i cantly higher than in those devel op ing at 25 °C and the dif fer ence in stachyose con tent was three-fold (Horbowicz et al 1998). Nev er the less, Górecki et al (1996) study ing mat ura tion of white lu pin seeds could de tect only mi nor ef fects of tem per a ture on the lev els of raffinose series oli go sac cha rides. Osmoprotectants (in clud ing car bo hy drates) can shield phospholipids and proteins from de hy dra tion dam age by pro vid ing hydroxyl groups which re place wa ter in cell membranes.…”
