Soluble and conductive polypyrrole copolymers containing silicone tegomers

Abstract: Soluble and processable conductive copolymers of silicone tegomers and pyrrole were developed. This was easily accomplished by the oxidative polymerization of pyrrole monomer by Ce(IV) salt in the presence of silicone tegomers with hydroxyl chain ends. The resulting copolymers were soluble in dimethylformamide. The products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1 H-NMR, and four-point probe conductivity, and their surface properties were investigated with contact-angle measurements.

“…Despite these advantages, the main drawback of PPy is its poor solubility in most common solvents which restricts its processability and makes it difficult to study optical and morphological properties of this polymer in solution phase. [28][29][30][31][32] An alternative route to enhance the solubility and processability of PPy is utilization of surfactant molecules as electrostatic stabilizers. A first approach toward increasing the solubility of PPy is to substitute pyrrole monomer at either carbon 18,19 or nitrogen 20,21 atoms and then polymerize the new derivatives into PPy.…”

“…By the inclusion of ketonic resin segments, PPy possessed T g and solubility 8. The same method was used to prepare soluble and conductive silicone tegomer/PPy copolymers 9. In this study, the effects of different types of ketonic resins on the conductivity, solubility, and thermal behavior of PPy/resin copolymers were investigated.…”

“…These copolymers have better solubility, 6 higher conductivity, 6,7 and higher contact angle values. 5,6 Besides, the electroinduced oxidative copolymerization of NVCz with methyl ethyl ketone-formaldehyde resin was studied and the copolymerization yield was found to be almost 10 times higher than the yield obtained by the redox polymerization method for the same Ce 41 concentration. 8 Electrolysis of NVCz solution usually coats the electrode surface with a green conducting PNVCz.…”
