Berde and Jolis (2018) performed metagenomic and microbial population analysis on the contents of a laboratory egg‐shaped digester receiving primary and secondary sludge with and without thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) and found that the digester receiving THP effluent under controlled conditions had a higher population of methanogens with the predominance of Methanosarcina , and attributed it to the high concentrations of acetic acid produced during THP. Digesters without thermal hydrolysis pretreatment contained acid‐producing bacteria and methane‐producing archaea, with almost equal fractions of methane‐producing Methanobacterium and Methanosarcina .…”
