Solubilization of organic compounds into as-synthesized spherical mesoporous silica

Abstract: Spherical mesoporous silica was prepared by dispersing tetrabutoxysilane (TBOS) in an alkaline solution into which a cationic surfactant had been dissolved. The spherical mesoporous silica was prepared within the limited concentration regions of the surfactant. The diameter of the spherical mesoporous silica was about 500 mm, and the BET specific surface area was above 1000 m 2 g À1 . Within the as-synthesized spherical mesoporous silica, phenol and some organic compounds in aqueous phase were solubilized into… Show more

“…Solutes can be solubilized into the hydrophobic space consisting of the alkyl chain assembly of cationic surfactants in the as-synthesized mesoporous silica due to the hydrophobic interaction. 29 However, the contribution of hydrophobic interaction is very small in a non-polar mobile phase.…”

“…The micelles of surfactant form hydrophobic regions in the nanochannels, and organic molecules can be solubilized into the nanochannels. 28,29 Thus, the surfactants in the NAM can facilitate the penetration of organic molecules through the membrane.…”

“…Since then, a large amount of research into synthetic methods for and applications of mesoporous materials has been undertaken in order to control their ordered nano-structure and morphologies [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. These oxides have high specific surface areas and mesopores with uniform size distribution.…”

“…Mesoporous silicas have been also used for the adsorption of organic substances. 23,24 Through this article we report the sorption potential of mesoporous lanthanum tungstate materials in removal of heavy metals and also methylmercuric chloride from electroplating effluent streams containing chromium and copper of substantial concentrations.…”
